Accessibility Checklist
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and checklist
Dsecription
The WCAG are international standards for accessible web content.
These are referenced in the eCH–0059 Accessibility Standard, which is binding in Switzerland for public sector services (such as Swiss Post).
The WCAG Guidelines show which requirements are placed on accessible web content so that it can be accessed by users with visual, auditory, motor or cognitive limitations.
Structure of WCAG
The WCAG are roughly divided into four principles:
Perceivable
Text alternatives for images, subtitles for audio, display adaptability and sufficient contrast
Operable
Keyboard operation, sufficient time for entries, prevention of seizures and navigability
Understandable
Readability, predictability and input assistance
Robust
Compatibility with assistive technologies
Success criteria
The WCAG contains 87 success criteria. Nine of these were added to WCAG version 2.2, 17 were added to WCAG version 2.1 and 61 were already available in WCAG 2.0. The success criteria are divided into three levels of compliance, reflecting their priority:
- Level A: Basic accessibility requirements, highest priority
- Level AA: medium priority requirements
- Level AAA: additional requirements low priority
Swiss Post adheres to the criteria of levels A and AA, as required in the eCH 0059 standard for public authority services.
Checklist
This practical checklist helps to assess the state of digital services in terms of accessibility. The accessibility checklist is aimed at design, development and content teams, as well as quality assurance managers and project managers.
