Our climate target in detail
By consistently reducing our CO₂ emissions, we aim to achieve net zero in our in-house operations and in our core business value chain by 2040. Together with partners, we will reduce additional emissions across our value chain within the scope of our economic capabilities with a view to achieving net zero by 2050 at the latest. We have set ambitious interim targets for 2030. We take responsibility for emissions that have not yet been reduced on the path to net zero. We will continue to expand our carbon removal and storage portfolio and will continue to invest in climate protection projects.
In line with international standards
We calculate our climate target in accordance with the international standards of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and are guided by the science-based, internationally applied framework of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Our previous climate target has been validated by SBTi. In 2026, we refined our climate target. The revalidation of our refined climate target by SBTi is pending.
Our climate target and the associated interim targets
Interim targets from 2030
- –42 percent of CO₂ emissions compared to 2021 in our in-house operations (for example through our own electric vehicles and own energy-efficient buildings)
- –25 percent of CO₂ emissions compared to 2021 in the value chain (for example through e-mobility in road transport by subcontractors)
- –42 percent of CO₂ emissions from the use of sold products in the value chain compared to 2021 (fuel sales to third parties)
Climate target from 2040
- –90 percent of CO₂ emissions compared to 2021 in our in-house operations and in our core business value chain (for example through e-mobility, energy-efficient buildings and road transport by subcontractors)
Climate target by 2050 at the latest
- –90% of CO₂ emissions compared to 2021 in the value chain (CO₂ emissions from our suppliers and products)
We take responsibility for emissions that have not yet been reduced on the path to net zero. We are building a portfolio for CO₂ removal and storage and continue to invest in climate protection projects. Here, we have set the following interim targets:
- By 2030, we will have begun building our portfolio for CO₂ removal and storage.
- From 2040, we will remove and store CO₂ emissions that remain in our in-house operations and in our core business value chain.
- By 2050, we will remove and store all CO₂ emissions (excluding financed emissions) that remain in our value chain due to our core business and partners.
